President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of veteran journalist Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria’s media industry and democratic development.
Oladipo, who was 56, was a former Political Editor of The Punch and the founder and publisher of The Eagle Online.
The President’s reaction was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu praised Oladipo’s years of dedicated journalism, particularly his role in political reporting and his commitment to providing Nigerians with reliable information through both traditional and digital media platforms.
He noted that journalists play an important role in democracy by informing citizens, encouraging public debate and holding leaders accountable.
The President said Oladipo’s professional journey reflected a strong commitment to journalism and the growth of Nigeria’s digital media space.
Tinubu recalled that after his time at The Punch, Oladipo contributed to online journalism through The Eagle Online, which became part of the expanding digital news landscape in Nigeria.
“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation,” Tinubu said.
“He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy.”
The President added that Oladipo’s contributions to political journalism and digital media would continue to be remembered.
He extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and his friends.
Tinubu prayed for comfort and strength for those affected by the loss.
Freedomonline reports that Oladipo died on Tuesday after reportedly falling ill suddenly at his office in Lagos.
