Armed thugs were on the rampage in Benin City, Edo State on Monday.
They invaded the State High Court, venue of the tribunal in the capital city to disrupt the pre-hearing session over the validity of the September 21 governorship election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Governor Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner and was sworn-in to succeed former Governor Godwin Obaseki last month.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is challenging Okpebholo’s victory.
Early on Monday morning, PDP supporters and sympathisers were at the court premises to give solidarity to the PDP candidate but the thugs, suspected to be working for APC, attacked them.
Lawyers were chased away.
Some party members were injured. Court officials, in their bid to escape the mayhem, also suffered series of injuries.
Security agents later restored peace.
Some of the thugs were arrested.
