A 41-year-old man, Abraham Nouvi, who stood surety for a fraud suspect but could not produce him when needed, on Friday appeared at an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a count of perversion of justice.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Inspector N. A. Simon, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on September 27, at 2 p.m. at Ago-Okota Police Station in Lagos State.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant stood surety for one Peter Okoku suspected of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.
Simon said that the defendant had promised the police to produce the suspect when needed but failed to do so.
He said the offence contravened Section 132 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. S. Okubule, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
She ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until December 20 for mention.
