*Nigeria to view for World Cup slot in playoffs
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the quarter-finals on Sunday evening.
The encounter at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, was the 14th WAFCON meeting between the two nations, with Nigeria having the upper hand.
While the defending champions have won nine times in open play and twice more via penalty shoot-outs, the Indomitable Lionesses have recorded just one victory and one draw.
Cameroon opened the scoring in the thrilling encounter in the 19th minute after nineteen-year-old defender Myriam Nyadjou scored with a direct free kick.
On the resumption of the second half, Justin Madugu’s ladies threw everything at their opponents, but the Lionesses held on to advance to the semi-finals.
With the win, Cameroon will now face tournament hosts Morocco—who defeated South Africa in another last-8 game played on Saturday—in the semi-finals of the competition.
Meanwhile, the loss means Nigeria failed to defend their trophy and missed the opportunity to book a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The team will, however, play in intercontinental playoffs to attempt booking a ticket to the World Cup.
