The Nigerian Army has warned officers and soldiers against irresponsible use of social media, saying such conduct could endanger military operations and national security.
Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Emekah, General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, gave the warning during the Third Quarter Social Media Awareness Lecture held at the division’s headquarters.
Emekah said the programme was designed to educate personnel on the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s policy on social media use.
According to him, the lecture focused on online violations, responsible digital behaviour and the consequences of breaching military social media guidelines.
The GOC said cases of social media misuse by military personnel had continued despite the existence of clear rules.
He warned that careless online activities could expose sensitive information, compromise operations and damage the image of the military.
Emekah said every soldier had a duty to protect operational information and preserve the integrity of the Nigerian Army both online and offline.
He added that the awareness campaign would help reduce policy violations and prevent the leakage of classified military information on digital platforms.
The GOC commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for organising the sensitisation programme.
He expressed confidence that the lecture would improve personnel’s understanding of cybersecurity, operational security and responsible use of social media.
Meanwhile, the Headquarters 6 Division Garrison also received 126 cadets of the 75 Regular Course, Naval Wing, of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
The cadets were on an operational study tour as part of their training programme.
Senior Instructor of the NDA Naval Wing, Cdr. Clement Theophilus, said the visit was intended to expose the cadets to real operational environments.
He said the tour would broaden their knowledge of joint military operations and deepen their understanding of maritime security.
Theophilus added that the visit would also help the cadets understand cooperation between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy in tackling maritime crime.
Receiving the cadets, Commander of 6 Division Garrison, Brig.-Gen. Abubakar Bello, stressed the importance of inter-service collaboration in protecting national security.
Bello said cooperation among security agencies remained vital to securing Nigeria’s maritime environment and critical national infrastructure.
He said such collaboration was also necessary to deny economic saboteurs freedom of operation in the Niger Delta region.
The commander advised the cadets to remain disciplined, morally upright and committed to the highest standards of military professionalism.
He urged them to uphold the values of loyalty, integrity, courage and selfless service.
Bello described good character as the foundation of effective leadership in the military.
The study tour featured presentations on the activities of 6 Division, especially its role in protecting critical national infrastructure and supporting joint security operations in the Niger Delta.
