Seriake Dickson joins NDC

Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West Zone in the Senate, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his formal joining of the newly-formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a party he founded and now leads.
The move is being seen as a significant realignment within Nigeria’s political landscape, and a pointed critique of the current administration.
Senator Dickson was forthright in explaining his decision, stating he refused to “jump on the bandwagon” and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He voiced strong concerns over what he described as the APC’s “abuse and disrespect of the country’s diversity,” alongside failures in national security and economic management, leading to widespread hardship.
“Nigeria must never become a one-party state,” Dickson emphasised in a statement released today. He also expressed reservations about the African Democratic Congress (ADC), questioning its core principles and whether it represented a genuine coalition or a fractured alliance.
The NDC, according to Dickson, will prioritise national security, education, healthcare, and economic reform, advocating for a “stronger, fairer, and more prosperous Nigeria” based on true federalism.

“Our priorities begin with national security, ensuring the protection of lives and property through strengthened defence and security institutions; education and skills development to build human capacity and drive national progress.
“The party will pursue affordable and quality healthcare for all Nigerians; a free-market economy guided by responsible regulation and social protection; industrialisation and local production to reduce dependence on imports; modernised agriculture and food security across the value chain.
“It will drive empowerment and inclusion of women and youth in governance and development; true federalism and devolution of powers to strengthen states and local governments; environmental protection and remediation of degraded areas; provision of affordable housing and modern towns.
“Pan-Africanist foreign policy and economic diplomacy will be its core mandate, preservation and promotion of Nigeria’s culture and heritage; expansion of national infrastructure and transportation networks; reliable and sustainable power and energy supply as well as reform of the public service to ensure efficiency and accountability, and large-scale employment creation across sectors to provide opportunities for all Nigerians.”
Analysts suggest this move reflects growing dissatisfaction with the APC’s performance and a desire for a viable alternative, though the NDC’s ability to gain traction nationally remains to be seen.
The defection also raises questions about the long-term stability of Nigeria’s multi-party system.
