Senegal to Appeal CAF Verdict Awarding AFCON Title to Morocco

The Senegalese Football Federation has rejected a controversial ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title to Morocco.

The federation confirmed it will challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), describing the outcome as unacceptable.

CAF’s Appeal Board had ruled that Senegal forfeited the final match, awarding a 3-0 victory to the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.

The decision followed a disrupted final in Rabat, where Senegalese players briefly left the pitch in protest over key officiating calls, including a disallowed goal and a penalty decision

In a statement, the Senegalese federation said it had formally received the ruling issued on March 17, 2026, and criticised the process behind the verdict.

It explained that CAF’s Appeals Committee overturned an earlier disciplinary ruling, citing procedural concerns related to fair hearing.

The governing body also held that Senegal’s actions breached specific regulations, leading to the forfeiture of the match.

However, the Senegalese federation strongly disagreed, arguing that the ruling undermines the integrity and credibility of African football.

It described the decision as unprecedented and insisted that it would pursue legal redress through CAS.

The federation further assured fans and stakeholders that it remains committed to fairness and transparency, pledging to provide updates as the appeal process unfolds.
