Trade and Investment Minister, Dr. Okechukwu Elenamah, has been mentioned in the alleged illegal repatriation of $13.9 billion from Nigeria by telecommunications giant, MTN, through its bankers to its home country, South Africa.
The alleged repatriation was done from 2006 to 2016.
Also mentioned in the deal are Diamond Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Stanbic IBTC and Citi Bank.
Senator Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi), who raised a motion on the floor of the Upper Chamber on Tuesday, accused the minister and the banks of working against the economic interest of the country and urged the National Assembly to investigate the matter.
He mentioned Elenemah of allegedly facilitating the deal.
The Senate immediately directed its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions to investigate the alleged illegal repatriation.
