Cristiano Ronaldo has surpassed his best-ever goal tally in a single season, scoring a first-half hat-trick in Real Madrid’s clash with Getafe.
The forward headed into the final game of the Blancos’ disappointing campaign knowing he was already effectively crowned the top goalscorer in La Liga for 2014-15 due to Lionel Messi’s two goals for Barcelona in their 2-2 draw with Deportivo La Coruna leaving him two efforts away from the Portugal international.
Real Madrid’s hopes of beating Barca to domestic glory were deflated last weekend but that did not stop Carlo Ancelotti’s men starting in style on Saturday, with Marcelo’s inch-perfect cross met by the powering head of Ronaldo 13 minutes into hosting Getafe.
Not happy with just equalling his best-ever tally for a Liga season (46), he then surpassed that total by scoring a free kick to bring Madrid back level at 2-2 with Getafe and, in the process, equalling his previous best 60 goals in 2011-12.
But that personal record was broken two minutes later when the 30-year-old converted a penalty to put the Blancos back into the lead at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring his 313th goal in his 300th game for the club.
Ronaldo’s 48 goals not only make him the top goalscorer in the major European leagues in 2014-15 and a three-time Pichichi winner, but he is now only 10 efforts behind Raul in Madrid’s all-time scorer record-books.
