The atmosphere at the Marquee Events Centre, nestled within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State was one of collective solemnity and purpose.
On Thursday, July 23, 2026, the elegant venue was filled with a cross-section of Nigeria’s intellectual, legal and political elite.
They had gathered for the 8th annual anniversary lecture of Penpushing Media, an event that has become a cornerstone in the nation’s calendar of public discourse.
As the sun cast long shadows over the historic library grounds, the theme of the day, “Restoring Electoral Integrity: The Path to Good Governance and Public Accountability,” resonated with an urgent clarity, setting the stage for a series of profound, often sobering, reflections on the state of the nation’s democracy.
The proceedings, impeccably chaired by the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Lemo, began with a flurry of intellectual energy.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Lemo, a revered figure in the financial sector, emphasised the interconnectedness of economic stability and political integrity.
He drew parallels between his experience in banking consolidation and the need for a similar “restructuring of our political conscience,” hinting that without electoral integrity, the nation’s economic foundations would remain shaky. His presence lent a weight of financial discipline to the day’s political discourse.
When the keynote speaker, the indomitable legal luminary Femi Falana (SAN), took to the podium, the hall fell into a rapt, reverent silence.
Falana, ever the firebrand, wasted no time in delivering a characteristically incisive and unflinching address.
With characteristic gravity, he declared that “if you are going to talk about electoral integrity, you must start with the primaries,” exposing the rot at the very genesis of the electoral process.
He launched a blistering critique on the monetisation of politics, referencing the staggering sums of between N20 billion and N30 billion reportedly spent by aspirants during party primaries.
“If you are spending between ₦20 billion and ₦30 billion on a primary election,” he challenged the audience, “how much are you going to spend in the real election?”
He posited that such astronomical sums could not come from legitimate sources, warning that this “plutocracy” undermines democracy and promotes corruption .
The senior advocate further warned of the existential threats facing the nation’s multi-party system, cautioning that the deregistration of political parties and the shrinking of civic space could trigger a political crisis.
He painted a stark picture of a nation where political exclusion has historically encouraged undemocratic forces to thrive, a history Nigeria cannot afford to repeat. The audience, comprising legal practitioners, journalists and civil society actors, nodded in solemn agreement, a palpable sense of urgency hanging in the air as he concluded.
The heavy weight of Falana’s words was followed by gracious remarks from the distinguished dignitaries.
Justice Oladeinde Shoremi (retired), the Father of the Day, brought a judicial perspective to the discourse.
The former Court of Appeal judge, in his speech, echoed the need for a judicial system that must be seen to be incorruptible to support the electoral process.
He spoke about the judiciary being the last hope of the common man, and as such, must guard its independence jealously to serve as a check on the executive and legislative excesses.
Honouring the occasion as the Mother of the Day, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late sage and a call to action for the new generation.
She lamented the decline in the quality of political leadership since the era of her father, who championed free education and social welfare. She charged the audience, particularly the media, to champion the values of integrity and selflessness she says are central to good governance.
Her presence, a direct link to Nigeria’s political history, added a layer of historical depth to the conversations about the present and future .
The Ogun State Government was ably represented by Honourable Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media, Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Mr. Waheed Adesina, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy.
Both men, in their respective remarks, reiterated the state government’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to free speech and accountable governance.
They emphasised that the state was proud to host such a critical national conversation.
In his closing remarks, the founder of Penpushing Media, Prince Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, flanked by members of the Editorial Board, spoke passionately about the role of the media in the struggle for a better Nigeria.
He reiterated that Penpushing Media’s corporate social responsibility is not just about reporting the news but actively participating in shaping a better society . The event, which also featured a robust panel session with Mrs. Kemi, Director of Production Services at Ogun Update, and other intellects, concluded with a renewed sense of urgency.
As attendees filtered out of the hall, the warnings of Falana, the wisdom of the elders and the passion of the media resonated, leaving an indelible impression: the path to good governance is paved with the integrity of the ballot, and the journey is one we must all undertake with renewed vigour.
