Refuse heaps have once again resurfaced at the ever-busy Onitsha-Owerri Road and some streets within Onitsha in Anambra, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
A NAN correspondent who monitored the situation in the metropolis on Monday observed that the refuse in most of the collection centres was making its way to the drains.
The Anambra Government, Onitsha North and South local governments had invested in opening up drains, scooping silts and debris hindering flow of water following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) flood warnings.
However, it was observed that apart from the refuse heaps, the activities of waste managers at the dumpsite on Onitsha-Owerri Road in the outskirt of Onitsha, was causing traffic gridlock and discomfort to road users.
The unkempt environment is now an eyesore to road users, while members of the public have expressed concern about the health implications of the situation.
When contacted on the cell-phone, Mr Sebastian Okoye, Commissioner for Environment, said that he was not aware of the refuse.
”I am in a meeting now for our party’s primary.
”I will go to Onitsha and check things out after the primary and see what the ministry can urgently do about the development,” Okoye said.
Observers, especially environmental analysts, however, believe that the eyesore is a rubbish of the state government’s efforts in cleaning up and beautifying Onitsha.
