Record media applications received for Special Olympics

A World Games-record number of media applications have been received for the 2015 World Games in Los Angeles. Through June 6, 1,036 applications from 67 countries have been received for the Games, not including those from Official Broadcast Partner, ESPN.

The previous high for media credentials issued was 889 in Athens, Greece for the 2011 World Games, including the Greek national broadcaster ERT. For Los Angeles, more than 1,250 media are expected to attend some part of the Games.

While the open-application period ended on June 1, applications for media credentials are still being received on a space-available basis.

Accommodations reserved by LA2015 for news media, at favorable rates at quality hotels in the downtown Los Angeles area is slated to end on June 9, 2015. Media attending the Games who wish to stay in these hotels, supported by the LA2015 transportation system, are asked to book immediately.

The Opening Ceremony of the 2015 World Games will take place on Saturday evening, 25 July 2015, from 6-9 p.m. in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The centerpiece will be the Parade of Athletes, representing the largest gathering of nations ever in Los Angeles. The current record of 140 nations present for a single event was set at the Games of the XXIIIrd Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1984, then tied by the International Olympic Committee’s Women’s Conference held at the J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE in 2012.

With more than 9,000 total delegates – including athletes, coaches and officials – expected to participate in the Ceremony, finding enough space on the Coliseum infield is a special challenge. The field area itself is considerably smaller than in 1984 due to the removal of the running track when the field was lowered in 1993 to install 14 additional rows of seats closer to the football field. The logistics of installing enough folding chairs and drinking water for the delegations is a major planning task for show producers FiveCurrents.

The entertainment aspects of the program are expected to be announced this week. Tickets are on sale now via the www.LA2015.org Web site, with four price tiers scheduled at $120, $100, $60 and $30.
