The Provost, Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State, Dr Isma’ila Ado-Funtua, has urged the state government to intensify efforts in enhancing the teaching of science subjects in secondary schools for development.
He made the call while speaking as a host at an award presentation in honor of some personalities that contributed to the development of Dutsin-ma Local Government, organised by the Dutsin-ma Development Forum (DDF), on Sunday.
He said, “I attended a workshop organised by the UNICEF in Jigawa State, where we discussed on the problem associated with teaching of science subjects in secondary schools.
“We were showed the number of teachers and their distribution in schools.
“After the workshop, I conducted an investigation on the admission we gave in science courses especially Physics in previous years, which proved that all what was said was true.”
He went further to explained that, “Physics teachers are lacking, because one can understand that even in our admissions.
“Going by the number of students enrolled into the National Certificate of Education (NCE) program.
“Very few students, not up 50 are currently studying Physics, from NCE 1 to 3, hence the need to change the narration,” Ado-Funtua said.
He, therefore, stressed the urgent need to have more teachers in science subjects, especially Physics, saying, ” this is because whoever want to read medicine and engineering must have it.”
Responding on the raised issue, the State’s Head of Service, Alhaji Usman Isyaku, said that the government has already designed a blueprint that would address that problem.
He said that the government had constituted a committee on civil service that submitted its report and the government was now studying it in order to take appropriate measures to address such problems.
Isyaku said that the government would soon sponsor 40 indigent students to Egypt to study Medicine, while others would be sent to India and other countries to study related courses in medicine and sciences.
The head of service also said that the government has commenced the construction of three special schools for the talented students in the three senatorial zones to educate children of the poor.
He said that would enable the children of the poor to favorably compete with those of the elites.
