A flurry of partisan activities began on Monday night over alleged moves by the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari at a joint sitting on Tuesday.
The partisan move reached a peak in the house of a prominent senator where federal lawmakers are already signing to endorse Buhari’s impeachment.
But in a counter move, presidency officials have already instructed two senators – a former governor and a lawyer – to disrupt the plan.
The two senators met with some of their colleagues ‘up till 3a.m. on Tuesday to ensure the move fails’.
It was learned that ‘the last straw’ that severed the relationship between the Presidency and National Assembly was the open indictment of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, over the Offa, Kwara State robbery.
Saraki, who was asked to report at police headquarters in Abuja, has now been told to send his defence in writing after series of meetings Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had with security chiefs on Monday.
It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, had earlier had altercations with Senators Misau and Dino Melaye.
Said a senator: “This is the time to put a stop to this nonsense. We have concluded collation of signatures and in a joint sitting today (Tuesday), we will commence the impeachment of President Buhari”.
But, the two senators leading a coalition against the impeachment move are not giving up.
It is, however, not clear if those against Buhari will get the required 74 Senators and 240 House of Representatives members to impeach the President.
