Power surge destroys properties in Oyo community

From Bode Durojaiye, Oyo.

Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed by power surge at Awe town, Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The high power voltage came from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Items destroyed include industrial generator, laptops, circuit breakers, television sets, ceiling and oscillated fans, as well as other electrical appliances..
The upsurge, which occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, sparked off what is known as GP in the insulators .
But for the quick alarm raised by residents, many houses would have been razed.
Some of the residents, while counting their losses, expressed strong indignation over the incident.
“We thank God that although many properties were destroyed, no life was lost. Who will bear costs of damages now, IBEDC or who? We expect IBEDC to be more proactive in order to avoid future occurrences. It is only in Nigeria that there is power upsurge without announcement in the media. In advanced countries, it is not done, otherwise such power generating body will be sued and damages claimed.’’
Efforts to contact the Business District Manager of IBEDC at its zonal headquarters, Oyo proved abortive as he was said to be away on official assignment.’
Meanwhile, IBEDC officials were seen on Thursday rectifying the faults.
