Power Instability Slows Smart Manufacturing Growth in Nigeria – Expert

Nigeria’s inconsistent electricity supply is significantly slowing down the adoption of smart manufacturing technologies, according to energy expert Orebiyi Godfrey.

Speaking in Abuja, the renewable energy engineer said modern industrial systems depend heavily on stable and uninterrupted power, a requirement that remains a major challenge in the country.

Godfrey explained that smart factories rely on advanced technologies such as automation, sensors, and real-time data systems, all of which require constant electricity to function effectively.

He noted that frequent power outages force manufacturers to rely on diesel generators, increasing operational costs and reducing the efficiency gains expected from smart production systems.

According to him, while smart manufacturing offers benefits such as improved productivity, reduced waste, and cost savings, these advantages cannot be fully realised without reliable power infrastructure.

Godfrey identified solar energy as a viable alternative for supporting industrial operations, especially during daytime production cycles.

However, he cautioned that solar power alone cannot meet the continuous energy demands of fully automated factories, as it depends on weather conditions and daylight availability.

He added that integrating battery storage systems is necessary for stability, but this significantly raises the cost of implementation for many manufacturers.

The expert recommended a hybrid energy approach that combines solar power, battery storage, generators, and grid electricity to ensure consistent supply.

While this model offers a more dependable solution, he acknowledged that it requires substantial investment and technical expertise, which may be beyond the reach of smaller firms.

Godfrey emphasised that gradual adoption of energy-efficient technologies could help manufacturers transition over time, but broader structural improvements are essential.

He called for government intervention through targeted policies, including tax incentives, financing options, and public-private partnerships to support clean energy adoption in the industrial sector.

He stressed that improving power infrastructure remains critical to unlocking Nigeria’s full potential in smart manufacturing and industrial development.
