The Rivers State Police Command has suspended a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) over allegations of extortion and professional misconduct in Port Harcourt.

The suspension was confirmed on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, while addressing journalists.

According to reports circulating on social media, the officer allegedly collected ₦500,000 from a suspect in exchange for securing his release from detention.

The allegation further claimed that the payment was transferred into an Opay account linked to a name believed to belong to the suspended officer.

Authorities said the claims are currently under investigation.

The reports also accused the officer of misconduct in a separate incident involving a woman who allegedly reported domestic violence.

It was claimed that the DPO arrested the woman and later charged her to court after she reported being assaulted by her husband.

The police say these allegations are part of the ongoing investigation.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed a comprehensive probe into the matter.

ASP Agabe said the officer has been immediately removed from duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The officer has been relieved of his duties pending a thorough and impartial investigation,” she said.

The command stressed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and professionalism within the force.

It warned that abuse of office and unethical conduct would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The police also assured residents that any officer found guilty after investigation would face appropriate disciplinary action.

The command urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of misconduct through appropriate channels to strengthen police accountability.

It reaffirmed its commitment to restoring public trust and maintaining discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
