A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Joshua Samuel, to 13 months imprisonment for trafficking 4.7kg of Cannabis Sativa.

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, Ibadan.

The court found Samuel guilty after he entered a plea bargain and the prosecution presented evidence linking him to the offence.

Justice Maha said the sentence took into account the defendant’s status as a first-time offender and his expression of remorse.

She, however, stressed the need for punishment to serve as a deterrent to others.

In her ruling, the judge ordered that the convict serve part of his sentence in custody and undergo rehabilitation.

“He shall spend nine months in prison and four months under non-custodial supervision, receiving counselling with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),” she ruled.

She also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the seized cannabis.

According to the prosecution counsel, Mrs R.O. Ige, the offence was committed on September 16, 2025, at the Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

She told the court that NDLEA operatives acted on intelligence reports and intercepted the convict in possession of a black sack containing the illicit substance.

The offence was said to contravene Section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
