Enugu State Police Command has commenced full scale investigations into the fire inferno that razed some parts of Ogbete market, Enugu, on Friday.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement, said that the fire incident started at the rail line axis of the Market on Friday afternoon and was put off through the prompt intervention of good spirited individuals in the market, who used fire extinguisher to put-off the fire, and prevented it from escalating and more destruction.
Amaraizu said that the inferno started from an electric generating set and was building up before it was promptly extinguished.
He also disclosed that the fire incident of 2/1/2020 in the afternoon at No 12 press lane Achara Layout Enugu was said to have left one flat among the six flats in the compound with properties whose values are yet to be estimated burnt.
The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to established just as no life was lost.
The Chief Fire Officer, Enugu State, Engr. Okwudiri Ohaa, expressed happiness that the traders lived up to expectation by putting their fire training knowledge by the State Fire service to work before his men could arrive the scene.
Ohaa appealed to traders to be careful and always be on the look out, especially this harmattan period to avoid fire disaster in the market, emphasising that the market authority should make the roads leading to and around the market accessible to fire trucks in case of any eventuality.
The Fire boss regretted that his men fought so hard for about half an hour to gain access into the market.
He thanked the governor for the provision of fire extinguishers in the market and for his support to the State Fire Service pointing out that the governor’s proactive measures had saved the situation.
