The Ogun State Police Command has deployed a tactical team to Ajebo in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area after a video on social media alleged that herdsmen were preparing to launch an attack on the community.

In a statement on Friday, the command assured residents of the community that there was no imminent threat to it.

The statement was issued in Abeokuta by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola.

According to the statement, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered the tactical team led by the state Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) to assess the security situation in the community.

It said a joint operation was carried out by the police, Amotekun Corps and So-Safe Corps.

It added that local hunters and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria were part of intelligence-driven investigation around Ajebo and adjoining settlements.

It said that the operatives discovered that Fulani settlers in the area were not recent migrants but long-standing residents living peacefully within the community.

It added that women and children were seen in shelters with no arms or suspicious activity detected, while adult males were said to have travelled to Oyo State for trading in line with their regular economic routine.

It also said that the investigations revealed an extended RUGA settlement reportedly in existence for over a decade.

It said the Traditional Ruler of the community, Oba Rueben Oluwole, who was said to have approved a land allocation to the settlers, had been invited for clarification.

It said that the team of security operatives had continued surveillance in a forest, about 10km from the community, adding that the exercise was precautionary as the settlers were found to be unarmed and peaceful.

It urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant as well as refrain from sharing unverified information to avoid causing fear.
