Nine passengers have been killed after armed men attacked a commercial bus travelling through Dungus community in Kuru District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening when gunmen reportedly opened fire on the vehicle conveying passengers to Jos.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday through a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Alfred Alabo.
Gunmen Attack Bus on Motorcycle
According to the police, the attackers arrived on motorcycles and targeted the Toyota passenger bus with registration number BUU 621 ZL.
The command said it received a distress call at about 7:45 p.m. reporting that armed men had attacked the vehicle.
Seven passengers were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others who sustained gunshot injuries later died while receiving treatment at a hospital.
The total death toll from the attack has now risen to nine.
Police Begin Investigation, Launch Manhunt
Following the incident, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, deployed tactical teams, mobile police personnel, homicide detectives and forensic experts to the area.
The security teams were drawn from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and have been directed to investigate the attack and track down those responsible.
Faniyan described the incident as a “callous” act and expressed condolences to the families of the victims and residents of Plateau State.
Security Agencies Mobilised
The police commissioner ordered a comprehensive operation involving relevant security agencies to ensure the attackers are arrested and prosecuted.
He urged residents to remain calm but maintain vigilance and report suspicious activities to security authorities.
The command also reminded residents that the ban on commercial motorcycle operations within areas covered by the Greater Jos Master Plan remains in effect.
It warned motorcycle operators who violate the restriction that they would face legal consequences.
