Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has authorised the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other institutions he attended to release his academic records to individuals making legitimate requests.
Obi gave the approval through a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Mr Valentine Obienyem.
The move comes amid renewed public discussion over the academic qualifications of political candidates and ongoing legal action seeking access to Obi’s university records.
Academic Records Become Subject of Legal Dispute
The issue gained attention following a suit filed by Abayomi Arabambi, a Labour Party chieftain, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Arabambi is seeking an order compelling UNN to provide certified copies of documents relating to Obi’s Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, reportedly obtained from the institution in 1984.
The legal action has brought Obi’s academic records into public debate.
Obi Says He Has Nothing to Hide
Responding to the development, Obi said he welcomed lawful scrutiny of his educational background.
He stated that public officials and individuals seeking political office should be prepared to allow reasonable examination of their qualifications.
According to him, transparency regarding academic credentials can strengthen democratic accountability.
He said he had no objection to UNN releasing his certificates, records and other official documents where requests are made within the limits of the law.
Consent Extended to Other Institutions
The former Anambra State governor also authorised other educational institutions he attended in Nigeria and abroad to provide relevant academic information through approved procedures.
Obi said public confidence in leadership depends on openness and accountability.
He argued that scrutiny of public office seekers should be fair and applied consistently to all candidates.
“As a presidential candidate seeking the trust of Nigerians to lead our country, I welcome legitimate public interest in my background, qualifications and record,” he said.
Obi Challenges Other Candidates
Obi further called on other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public review.
He said such disclosure would help strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s political system.
According to him, leaders must demonstrate integrity, transparency and accountability before asking citizens for their trust.
He maintained that openness should become a standard expectation for anyone seeking the highest political office in Nigeria.
