A physician, Dr Tosin Odusanmi, has advised people who are diabetic to watch out for signs of low blood sugar called hypoglycemia, which could result to death.
Odusanmi gave the advice on Thursday in Ibadan and identified some of the early symptoms of diabetic hypoglycemia to include hunger, irritation and dizziness.
The physician said “for people with diabetes, low blood sugar occurs when there’s too much insulin and not enough sugar in their blood.
“You should watch for early warning signs of low blood sugar so that it can be treated promptly.
“Diabetic hypoglycemia can occur suddenly and it is characterised by unpleasant physical and psychological symptoms.
“These symptoms include anxiety, irritability, moodiness, sweating and headache. Untreated diabetic hypoglycemia can lead to seizures and loss of consciousness.’’
Udusanmi listed some of the factors that could cause hypoglycemia in people with diabetes to include excessive insulin intake, missed meals, too much of diabetes medications and exercising harder than usual.
He said that low blood sugar in diabetes could be prevented by regular monitoring of the blood sugar, not drinking alcohol, especially on empty stomach.
