The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has hailed the PDP’s enduring legacy as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic journey since its formation on Aug. 3, 1998.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, made the remarks on Sunday in Abuja in a statement signed by the Forum’s Director-General, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, to commemorate the party’s 27th anniversary.

Mohammed congratulated the party leadership, members, and supporters for their steadfast commitment to democracy and national development.

He noted that the PDP was founded during Nigeria’s historic transition from military rule to civilian governance and quickly emerged as a beacon of hope for millions seeking democratic freedoms, economic progress, and social justice.

“The party’s landmark victory in the 1999 general elections marked the beginning of a new democratic era, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo laying the foundation for progressive leadership and institutional rebuilding,” he said.

He highlighted that the PDP governed Nigeria for 16 consecutive years, producing three presidents and implementing transformative reforms in telecommunications, banking, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“These reforms fostered economic stability, improved workers’ welfare, expanded employment opportunities, stimulated investment, and revitalised entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction,” he added.

Mohammed also commended the PDP’s enduring commitment to power rotation between the North and South, a principle that promoted national unity and inclusiveness.

In spite of currently serving in the opposition, he said, the PDP continued to play a vital role in advancing democratic governance, defending citizens’ rights, and holding the government accountable.

“Its sustained presence in the National Assembly and various state governments reflects its deep connection with the Nigerian people and its strong adherence to democratic values,” he noted.

Reflecting on the party’s journey, Mohammed acknowledged that while the PDP had faced challenges, including internal disagreements and electoral setbacks, it has continued to demonstrate resilience and a strong will to reform.

“The party has made significant strides in fostering internal reconciliation and has remained vocal in calling for decisive action to tackle insecurity and restore peace to our communities,” he said.

As the PDP celebrates 27 years of political relevance, Mohammed described it as both a celebration of legacy and a call to renewed commitment to good governance, transparency, and public service.

“The road ahead is just as important as the path already taken. Nigerians look forward to a PDP that continues to evolve, inspire, and lead with integrity,” he added.
