The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has filed a 14-count criminal charge against five retired senior police officers over allegations of age falsification, forgery, and other violations of service rules.
Key Details of the Case
* Defendants: The five retired officers facing charges are:
* AIG Idowu Owohunwa (Rtd)
* CP Benneth Igwe (Rtd)
* CP Ukachi Peter Opara (Rtd)
* DCP Obo Ukam Obo (Rtd)
* ACP Simon A. Lough SAN (Rtd)
* Allegations: The police allege that these officers deliberately falsified their birth records to unlawfully extend their service years beyond the retirement age. For instance, AIG Owohunwa is accused of altering his birth year from 1967 to 1970.
* Court Proceedings: The case is before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja. The arraignment was initially scheduled for July but was adjourned to Thursday, September 25, 2025, to ensure the defendants’ presence in court.
* Legal Basis: The alleged offences are punishable under several sections of the Penal Code, including those related to conspiracy, forgery, and age falsification. The prosecution argues that these actions were a deliberate attempt to defraud the government and violate the Public Service Rules.
