PDP crisis will not polarise House of Representatives – Lawmakers

nigeria_house_of_repsSome members of the House of Representatives in Abuja on Wednesday assured that the crisis in the ruling PDP would not polarise the house.

It would be recalled that a free for all broke out on Sept.17, when the Alhaji Abubakar Baraje-led PDP National Working Committee (NWC) visited the PDP caucus of the house.

Rep. Segun Odeneye (APC-Ogun) said there would always be opposing views on issues in a democratic setting.

Odeneye said that it would be strange for every member of the party to agree on issues at all times, noting that what happened was a PDP affair.

He said that it boiled down to the fact that some people were aggrieved with the way things were being run in their party.

The lawmaker said even after the fracas, members still convened on the floor of the house to contribute positively to debate.

Rep. Mustapha Dawaki (PDP-Kano) said that the fight that broke out during the visit by Baraje was in no way capable of tearing members of the house apart.

In his reaction, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos), who differed from other members, said that the crisis was already pitching members in different camps.

Gbajabiamila, however, said that the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, was capable of handling and settling the matter amicably.

“The speaker has the capacity to keep it under control. Wherever you have different and competing tendencies, there will always be the case of new and old PDP,” he said.

He said that the crisis in PDP was normal, adding that it was a reminiscent of what happened in advanced democracies.

The legislator, however, cautioned that it should not be allowed to descend to the level of violence.

“The polarisation should only be seen in voting patterns of legislators,’’ Gbajabiamila said.
