A good reputation, no doubt, is an asset and the most favourable goodwill which any right thinking person ought to have.
If Nigerian politicians carry out opinion survey from time to time in their constituencies to ask, “Who do people say I am?”, definitely the
answer to the foregoing question would be “No, they do not”.
If they do, the trust which the people reposed in them would not have been betrayed as it is today.
They would have at all times be more conscious of their reputation by exhibiting responsible behaviours.
For sometime now, hardly a day passes
without most of Senators and House of Representatives members, including States’ legislators, getting into one controversy or the other thereby bringing themselves into ignominy.
Most of our politicians just mount the soap-box at campaign rallies and begin to make promises they can never fulfill.
Be that as it may, It is the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something, how does an average Nigerian see a
politician?
Or simply put, how does an average Nigerian perceive a politician?
There is no denying the fact that an average Nigerian does not see a politician as a truthful, trusted or sincere person.
Unfortunately, many forward-thinking Nigerians who remain cynical about politics and politicians only think of Nigerian legislators as people who are often absent from the National Assembly proceedings, jumping fences, fighting and throwing chairs, sharing money and making wild promises to get votes, or getting involved in one scandalous behaviour or the other. Many
Nigerians have never really thought seriously about the competencies required to be an effective legislator and using these competencies as the basis for selecting legislators and evaluating their performance.
Whereas, there are some among these lawmakers who are exemplary, conscientious and caring for their people and by extension , the less priviledged irrespective of party affiliation.
One of them is a distinguished Member of the House of Representatives representing Oyo Federal Fonstituency [Atiba, Afijio, Oyo-West and Oyo-East local governments’ areas of Oyo State, Honourable Prince Obasegun Akeem Adeniyi Adeyemi [Skimeh] .
Honourable Akeem Adeniyi Adeyemi ( Skimeh) is an illustrious son of His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo.
He is tested and trusted, humble to a fault, compasdionate, amiable, awesome, responsive , responsible and a down to the earth politician.
Ancient philosophers postulated that a perfect man is a product of growth through trial, rather than a sudden product of a crash programme.
I will not mention any of his numerous achievements in this report. You ask why?
Many people still want to know more about Skimeh and why is he so dynamic, exemplary and unique in legislative responsibility unlike his predecessors and contemporaries.
Skimeh, as a Federal Lawmaker, is a staunch promoter and defender of the Constitution and the laws of Nigeria, which he affirmed must seek to be beyond reproach.
He has a very high standard of personal integrity and conduct himself in a disciplined and ethical manner at all times.
To Honourable Prince Akeem.Adeyem, “you cannot make a claim to make laws and protect the legitimate rights of citizens when you are neck deep in unethical or illegitimate behaviours. Your character must be reflected in your personal and family life; work and business and in your conduct as a politician”.
Skimeh is an effective legislator who is good at listening and feeling the pulse of the people, receiving feedback from their constituents, analyzing and synthesizing the information he receives, as well.as negotiating, giving feedback to others, articulating their thoughts in writing, and communicating verbally with others.
This, Skimeh argued, is the only way they can actively engage their constituents, the media, the Executive and other stakeholders to achieve the results that the Nigerian people need.
He is a legislator that have the courage to speak truth to power regardless of whose ox is gored. Skimeh has a clear vision about what he wants to achieve, the principles and values he stands for and have the courage to maintain the course, fight the good fight, and leave out the purpose of his lives as a legislator.
With such courage, Skimeh is able to stand tall against any forces that wish to deprive Nigerian citizens and his constituents their legitimate rights and break down the walls of red-tape and bureaucratic bottle-necks that often stifles the progress of the legitimate progress of the Nigerian people.
Skimeh is really committed and have the political will, dogged commitment and relentless resilience to keep serving his constituents.
As a dogged fighter fighting justly for his people, he is still being confronted with a lot of opposition from the many well-entrenched interests who are determined to subjugate the collective prosperity of his people to their selfish personal gains.
Despite that, as a responsible legislator, he is prepared to make sacrifices above and beyond the call of duty to achieve his goals for his constituents and the Nigerian people.
Skimeh’s high level on interpersonal skills is superb.
The dynamic Lawmaker is able to connect with others, focus intentionally with others and empathize with the people he serves.
Without this level of empathy and connection, Skimeh woukd have bee emotionally detached from his people and will be unable to effectively represent their issues and needs. Far from it.
Watch out for part 3.
