Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing of a student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who was reportedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday.
Police authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to track down the suspects responsible for the attack.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that officers responded swiftly after receiving reports of the incident.
He said a coordinated manhunt had been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
Babaseyi also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student and the university community, assuring that the investigation is ongoing.
He added that the police remain committed to ensuring public safety and preventing a recurrence of such incidents in the state.
Following the tragic incident, the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University declared a lecture-free day to allow students and staff mourn the deceased.
The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Corporate Affairs Division, Mr Niyi Oduwole.
He explained that the decision was approved by the university Senate under the leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola.
The university management extended condolences to the family of the late student, describing the incident as deeply painful.
It assured students and staff that measures are being strengthened in collaboration with security agencies to improve safety within and around the campus.
The institution also urged students to remain calm and avoid any actions that could escalate tension during the mourning period.
The killing has raised renewed concerns about security around student communities in Ogun State, particularly in areas surrounding higher institutions.
Authorities have promised enhanced surveillance and increased cooperation with law enforcement agencies to safeguard lives and property.
