Onyeka Onwenu’s Final Film ‘Properties of the Gods’ Gets September Release Date

The producers of the historical Nollywood movie “Properties of the Gods” have announced plans to dedicate the film’s theatrical release to late Nigerian music icon and actress Onyeka Onwenu, alongside other cast members who passed away after contributing to the project.

The movie is scheduled to hit cinemas on September 4, 2026, a date the producers have named “Onyeka Onwenu Day” in honour of the legendary entertainer.

The film’s producer, Joseph Okechukwu, said the decision was made to celebrate the contributions of deceased members of the cast and preserve their legacy.

Tribute activities planned for late stars

Okechukwu said a series of activities would accompany the movie’s release, including visits to traditional rulers in the South-East and condolence visits to the families of the late artistes.

He added that a special tribute night would be held on September 3 to honour Onyeka Onwenu before the official cinema release.

The producer had earlier postponed the film’s planned premiere following the deaths of two actors who featured in the project — Onyeka Onwenu and actress Cynthia Okereke.

He explained that holding a major celebration while the families of the deceased were still mourning would not have been appropriate.

“Two artists who featured in this movie are dead,” Okechukwu said, referring to Onwenu and Okereke.

He said funds initially set aside for the premiere would instead support condolence visits to the families of the late performers.

Film explores Osu caste system in Igbo society

“Properties of the Gods” explores the long-standing Osu caste system in Igbo communities, a traditional practice that has historically subjected some people to discrimination and social exclusion.

Okechukwu said the movie was inspired by his years of advocacy against the practice and was created as a platform to encourage discussion and cultural reflection.

He explained that the film does not claim to provide all solutions to the challenges surrounding the Osu system but contributes to the wider conversation about social change.

“This movie does not answer all the questions that arise from the Osu caste system; it only forms a part of the conversation. It’s an ongoing conversation,” he said.

The producer expressed hope that the film would influence attitudes and encourage communities to reconsider practices based on fear, stigma and outdated beliefs.

Star-studded Nollywood production

The movie is directed by Uzodinma Okpechi and Okey Oku, featuring a lineup of established Nollywood actors.

The cast includes Pete Edochie, Joseph Okechukwu, Enyinna Nwigwe, Maria Benjamin, Zack Orji, Hilda Dokubo, Elvina Ibru, Linc Edochie, Jennifer Eliogu, Obi Okoli and Ofia Mbaka.

The film also features one of Onyeka Onwenu’s final acting appearances before her death.

Background Information

Onyeka Onwenu was one of Nigeria’s most respected entertainers, known as a singer, actress, journalist and public figure.

She contributed significantly to Nigerian music and film, appearing in several Nollywood productions during her career.

The Osu caste system refers to a traditional social classification historically associated with certain communities in Igboland. Critics have condemned the practice because of the discrimination and social exclusion faced by people labelled as Osu.

Several Nigerian filmmakers and activists have used creative works to encourage conversations about cultural practices and social justice.
