Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has directed sole administrators of the 27 local government areas of the state to set up a task force to check loitering by school children.
The directive is contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Media Aide, Mr William Unadike in Owerri on Wednesday.
The statement quoted the governor as saying that each task force should monitor the activities of school children who hawk or loiter during school hours in their areas.
Okorocha added that the state government had made education at all levels free and compulsory because of its desire to eradicate illiteracy.
He reiterated the administration’s desire to empower every youth in the state through the provision of quality education.
He urged parents to reciprocate the gesture by ensuring that their children took their studies seriously as it was a crime for any child in Imo not to go to school.
“Consequently, the present administration has provided free school uniforms to children of primary and post primary schools in the state.
“It equally provided them with desks and chairs because of the interest it attaches to education.’’
The governor called for the cooperation of everyone to enable the free education programme to succeed.
