The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has rescued a 15-year-old girl from an alleged human trafficking attempt to Libya.
The rescue operation was confirmed in Abuja by the NSCDC spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, who disclosed that the minor was found in the custody of a 46-year-old suspect in Kwali Area Council.
According to Ojobi, the suspect had allegedly held the teenager for about two weeks without the consent of her family before security operatives intervened.
The incident came to light after the victim’s mother reported her missing to the NSCDC Kwali Command, prompting an immediate investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the girl may have been subjected to sexual abuse during her confinement.
Further interrogation of the suspect uncovered a plan to traffic the victim to Libya, where she was reportedly intended to be used for child labour.
FCT Commandant of NSCDC, Dr Olusola Odumosu, assured the victim’s family that the case would be pursued to its logical conclusion and that justice would be served.
He stated that intelligence gathering is ongoing to uncover possible trafficking networks linked to the suspect.
Odumosu reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
He warned that individuals involved in such criminal activities would face the full weight of the law once apprehended.
The NSCDC subsequently handed over both the suspect and the rescued victim to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The commandant also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities involving children to security agencies.
He emphasised that community cooperation is essential in tackling human trafficking and safeguarding minors across Nigeria.
