The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has renewed its collaboration with TotalEnergies in a fresh agreement aimed at strengthening efforts to reduce methane leaks, gas flaring, and carbon emissions across upstream oil operations in Nigeria.
The new deal extends the deployment of advanced emission monitoring technology for an additional 24 months.
The agreement was signed at the NNPC Towers in Abuja by the Executive Vice President, Upstream of NNPC Ltd, Udy Ntia, and the Country Chair and Managing Director of TotalEnergies Nigeria, Matthieu Bouyer.
The renewed partnership focuses on expanding the use of the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology across upstream oil assets.
According to NNPC Ltd, the initiative supports its broader environmental goals, including methane reduction, improved emission tracking, and compliance with global climate commitments.
The programme aligns with Nigeria’s participation in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 and the company’s ambition to achieve near-zero methane emissions by 2030.
It also supports the Oil & Gas Decarbonisation Charter (OGDC) and ongoing gas flare reduction targets.
Speaking on the development, Udy Ntia, represented in a statement by Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh, said the renewed agreement demonstrates NNPC’s commitment to building a transparent and data-driven decarbonisation system.
He noted that the AUSEA technology enables accurate detection and measurement of methane emissions, helping operators prioritise mitigation efforts across facilities.
Ntia also called for improved reporting systems and the potential transfer of technology to strengthen long-term capacity.
The Senior Vice President of TotalEnergies Africa, Mike Sangster, commended the continued partnership with NNPC Ltd.
He stated that TotalEnergies was the first oil company in Nigeria to eliminate routine gas flaring across its operated assets.
According to him, the AUSEA system played a key role in achieving that milestone and will remain central to future emission reduction efforts.
The AUSEA system is a drone-based emission detection technology developed by TotalEnergies, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the University of Reims.
It is used to identify hidden emission sources, improve reporting accuracy, and support corrective operational decisions.
The system also helps measure flare efficiency and provides data for environmental compliance and monitoring.
