The Nkwo Nnewi Motorcycle Spare Parts Market has officially reopened for Monday business following enforcement measures by the Anambra State Government aimed at ending the long-running sit-at-home disruption.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo had earlier ordered the temporary closure of the major spare parts market after traders failed to comply with the directive to resume full commercial activities on Mondays.
The New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market, widely known as Nkwo Nnewi, was sealed after authorities observed low turnout on a previous Monday. The governor’s Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, had warned traders that continued non-compliance with the no sit-at-home directive would attract sanctions.
The sit-at-home practice has significantly affected economic activities across parts of the South-East, including Anambra State.
The Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Echezona Anazodo, visited the market and confirmed improved compliance, noting that many traders reopened their shops.
He expressed satisfaction with the turnout and stated that the earlier closure could have been avoided if similar participation had been recorded previously. However, he warned that shops belonging to traders who refused to resume business would be sealed, rather than shutting down the entire market again.
The reopening of Nkwo Nnewi market forms part of Governor Soludo’s broader strategy to restore full economic activities on Mondays and strengthen business confidence in the state.
State officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that markets operate without disruption, emphasizing that compliance with government directives is necessary to protect livelihoods and sustain economic growth in Anambra.
