Nigeria’s longest serving CJN, Lawal Uwais, is dead

The longest serving Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, is dead.
He died on Friday in Abuja.
Born on June 12, 1936, he would have been 89 on Thursday next week. Justice Uwais served as CJN from 1995 until 2006 when he retired.
He was CJN when the late General Sani Abacha, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo were Commanders-in-Chief.

After retiring from the Supreme Court, he was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to lead the Electoral Reform Committee, where he played a key role in efforts to improve Nigeria’s electoral system.
Uwais was the son of the Chief Alkali, and later Waziri of Zaria emirate.
