Nigeria’s $48.65bn Reserves Boost Economic Stability — Experts

Economic analysts have praised the Nigerian government for maintaining external reserves at $48.65 billion, describing the development as a key indicator of resilience in the face of global economic challenges.

The experts, speaking in separate interviews in Lagos, said the reserve level supports macroeconomic stability and boosts investor confidence.

Ayo Teriba of Economic Associates noted that sustaining strong reserves despite global shocks reflects effective economic management.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s exchange rate has remained relatively stable, while the stock market shows signs of improvement.

Teriba also observed that inflationary pressures, though present, have not escalated sharply.

While acknowledging the progress, Teriba urged the government to introduce targeted support programmes to ease the burden on vulnerable Nigerians.

He highlighted rising fuel costs as a major challenge and suggested expanded access to alternatives such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Similarly, Muda Yusuf of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise said the reserves have helped stabilise the foreign exchange market.

He explained that the current reserve level provides sufficient coverage for imports over several months, strengthening the country’s financial position.

Yusuf, however, warned that external factors such as geopolitical tensions and global market uncertainty could affect the reserves.

He noted that investor reactions to global crises, including capital flight to safer markets, could reduce reserve levels.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria shows that Nigeria’s reserves declined from $50.03 billion in March 2026 to $48.65 billion by April 16, 2026.

The drop of approximately $1.38 billion over five weeks reflects ongoing economic pressures and financial obligations, including debt servicing.

Experts emphasised that foreign reserves play a critical role in: Stabilising the national currency, Supporting international trade, Meeting external debt obligations, Strengthening economic confidence.
