Nigerian Military Begins Trial of Officers Over Alleged Coup Plot

The Nigerian Armed Forces has officially commenced the trial of officers accused of involvement in an alleged coup plot, following the inauguration of a General Court-Martial in Abuja.

The proceedings began on Friday at the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess under heavy security presence. The accused personnel were transported to the venue early in the morning as authorities tightened access to the facility.

Media representatives were not allowed into the courtroom, as the hearing was conducted behind closed doors.

Several legal practitioners were seen arriving at the location prior to the session, indicating that the accused officers had secured legal representation.

The court-martial marks a significant step in the military’s disciplinary process after months of investigation into the alleged conspiracy.

The case traces back to October 2025, when about 16 serving officers—both senior and junior ranks—were detained over allegations initially described as acts of misconduct.

However, further inquiries by military authorities reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting a more serious offence involving an alleged attempt to undermine Nigeria’s constitutional order.

This development led to the decision to subject the officers to a full military trial.

Reports indicate that over 30 accused personnel were transported to the venue in a luxury bus as part of the security arrangements.

In a parallel legal process, the Federal Government of Nigeria has already charged several civilians and retired military officers before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the same alleged coup attempt.

Among those facing charges are a retired Major General and a serving police officer. They have been accused of offences including treason and terrorism, to which all defendants pleaded not guilty.

The court ordered their detention pending the determination of their bail applications.

The ongoing proceedings highlight a dual-track legal strategy, with active military personnel being tried under military law, while civilians and retired officers face prosecution in civilian courts.

As of the time of filing this report, further details regarding the court-martial hearings were yet to be made public.
