The Consulate General of Nigeria in New York football team has defeated the Consulate General of Mexico team to win the 2nd Edition of the Consular Corps Football Tournament.

A statement by the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Amb. Lot Egopija, on Monday said the team defeated Switzerland in the Semi Final and lifted the cup after defeating Mexico 5-1.

The envoy said 20 consulates participated in the five-aside tournament, which held at the Socceroof Complex in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday.

Egopija stated that the teams were divided into four groups with Nigeria in Group D.

“At the group level, Nigeria came second after Mexico and defeated El Salvador in the Quarter Finals,” he said.

The Consul General said the competition was organised by the Office of the Mayor of New York.

“It was organised by the Mayor’s office and the New York City Football Club, seeking to foster interaction between the Consular Corps and host communities,” he explained.

The Consulate General of Nigeria in New York team won all its matches except in group D.
