The collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in counter-terrorism has ushered in a new era of intelligence-driven, technology-enabled security operations, according to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

Speaking at the Nigerian Army Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja, Shaibu emphasized that joint operations with United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) have significantly strengthened the army’s operational effectiveness, including the recent neutralization of a senior Islamic State commander.

“The partnership has enabled precision targeting, intelligence fusion, and coordinated mission planning, which are vital in countering adaptive terrorist networks,” Shaibu said.

The army chief noted that contemporary terrorism operates in a networked, technology-driven environment, demanding sophisticated responses, including real-time intelligence sharing and multinational cooperation.

Shaibu highlighted that the Nigeria–U.S. collaboration now goes beyond advisory support to full operational integration encompassing surveillance, intelligence analysis, and joint mission execution in key theaters.

He added that these efforts have enhanced the Nigerian Army’s capacity to track high-value targets, disrupt terrorist logistics, and dismantle command structures, especially across the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel regions.

The COAS stressed that maintaining pressure on insurgent groups requires leveraging technology, precision engagement, and inter-agency cooperation, while also appreciating international partners for sustained operational support.

Shaibu concluded by reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to **strengthening regional and global counter-terrorism alliances**, emphasizing that future operations will increasingly rely on intelligence-led, technology-driven strategies to secure long-term stability.

The conference will continue with strategic briefings and operational reviews to optimize Nigeria’s counter-insurgency posture for the remainder of 2026.
