The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, was described by the NHRC as “deeply disturbing and a direct assault on human dignity.”
Dr. Tony Ojukwu SAN, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, made this statement in Abuja on Thursday, April 30, 2026, calling for justice and accountability for the victim’s family. “No Nigerian should lose his/her life at the hands of those who swore to protect them. Every life matters and must be protected,” Ojukwu said.
He condemned the actions of the officer involved, labeling them as “unacceptable” and inconsistent with the principles of justice in a civilized society. He expressed deep concern over the recurrent cases of excessive use of force by law enforcement officers, urging the Nigeria Police Force to take swift and decisive action to address this growing issue.
Ojukwu specifically called on the police authorities to ensure that officers assigned to special duties undergo regular mental and psychological evaluations to ensure they are fit to engage responsibly with civilians.
The NHRC further demanded immediate disciplinary action against ASP Nuhu Usman, the officer involved in the operation, in accordance with Nigerian police regulations and laws. Additionally, Ojukwu stressed the importance of fully implementing the recommendations of the NHRC’s Panel on Police Brutality as part of the broader reform efforts within the police force to prevent future violations.
The Commission also called for adequate compensation and justice for the family of Mene Ogidi, urging the authorities to ensure that justice is served promptly. Ojukwu warned that delays in delivering justice would only exacerbate public mistrust in state institutions and undermine confidence in law enforcement.
“Nigeria must never normalize brutality. Justice must speak louder than silence. No badge should become a license to kill,” he concluded.
The incident in Effurun, which allegedly involved Ogidi being shot by ASP Usman, occurred after intelligence linked him to an attempted shipment of a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.
