The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) on Sunday named former Head Coach of the under-17 women’s national team, Peter Dedevbo, as Head Coach of the under-20 women’s team, the Falconets. A statement in Abuja by Ademola Olajire, NFA’s Assistant Director (Media), said the former Flamingoes coach would be assisted by Toyin Ayinla and Haruna Uche.

Ayinla, a former captain of defunct Abiola Babes FC of Abeokuta and former coach of Gateway FC of Abeokuta, will serve as assistant coach, while Uche will serve as goalkeeper trainer.

Dedevbo was an assistant coach of the first-ever under-17 women’s team, which featured at the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals in New Zealand in 2008.

He was later appointed Head Coach of the team and led it to quarter-final berths in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010 and Azerbaijan in 2012. The statement added that Dedevbo had already swung into action by inviting to camp 30 players for screening, with the camp opening in Abuja on Monday.

The race for tickets to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Canada in August 2014 will get underway this month.

Nigeria’s Falconets, runners-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Germany in 2010 and semi-finalists in Japan in 2012, are up against their Burkinabe counterparts in the African first round fixtures.

The first leg match will come up in Nigeria in the last weekend of October, while the second leg comes up next month in Burkina Faso.
