The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully secured the conviction of 10 Filipino crew members and their vessel, MV Nord Bosporus, for smuggling cocaine into Nigeria.
In a statement released in Abuja, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed that the case involved 20 kilograms of cocaine brought into the country through the Apapa Seaport.
The court imposed financial penalties totaling six million dollars alongside an additional fine of N1.1 million following the judgment.
The agency disclosed that the vessel, which arrived from Santos, was intercepted after operatives discovered the drugs hidden deep within its cargo.
The suspects were arrested on November 16, 2025, during an operation carried out by NDLEA officers at the port.
NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa described the conviction as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria.
He noted that the ruling sends a clear message to global shipping operators and criminal networks that the country’s waters are no longer safe routes for illicit drug trade.
Marwa emphasised that the significant fines imposed in the case should act as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.
He added that the agency is now targeting not just drug seizures but also the financial structures and logistics used by trafficking syndicates.
The NDLEA boss commended the Apapa Strategic Command for its vigilance and professionalism in uncovering the concealed drugs.
He also praised the agency’s legal team and the judiciary for ensuring a timely and effective prosecution of the case.
Marwa reiterated the agency’s commitment to intensifying efforts against drug trafficking, stressing its importance for national security and the protection of Nigerian youths.
