Morsi trial set for Nov. 4 in Egypt

mohamed_morsiOusted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will face trial on Nov. 4 on charges of incitement in the 2012 death of a group of 10 protesters, judicial authorities said on Wednesday.

Also standing trial will be three aides of Morsi and several senior leaders in his Muslim Brotherhood.

The case will be heard at a criminal court in Cairo.

The defendants were accused of complicity in a violent crackdown by Morsi’s supporters against opponents during a protest against his rule outside the presidential palace in Cairo in December.

Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, has been detained at an undisclosed location since July when the country’s army deposed him following massive street protests against his one-year-old rule.

He faces another trial on charges of conspiring with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas to carry out hostile acts against Egypt during a 2011 revolt.

The revolt had forced his predecessor, Hosny Mubarak, to step down.

No date has been set yet for the second trial.
