To resolve the lingering minimum wage impasse between the Federal Government and Organised Labour, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North – APC) has proposed N90,000 as the new minimum wage.
Kalu made his position known on Tuesday in Abuja during Senate plenary shortly before Organised Labour suspended its strike.

The former Abia State Governor (1999 – 2007) urged the Senate to engage separately with the Federal Government and Labour Unions to agree with the proposed N90,000.

Following a motion moved by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour and Employment, Senator Diket Plang, Kalu advised the Senate to prevail on both parties to reach an agreement, explaining that N90,000 will imply a 40% increase from the current wage.

He described the complete shutdown of Nigeria’s power grid by labour unions as a ‘daring move’, saying it might take four days to bring back the grid.
