Middle East Crisis: UN Women Warns of Rising Death Toll Among Women, Girls.

UN Women has raised serious concerns over the growing humanitarian impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict, particularly on women and girls across the region.

In a statement released on Friday, the organisation highlighted the devastating consequences of recent military escalations, including airstrikes and widespread violence affecting multiple countries.

The agency acknowledged the announcement of a temporary two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as welcomed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

However, it expressed deep concern over continued hostilities, especially reports of intensified Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

UN Women warned that women and girls have been disproportionately affected by the violence, with significant loss of life reported across several countries.

According to available data, hundreds of women and girls have died since the escalation intensified, including a tragic incident in Iran where dozens of schoolgirls were killed in an airstrike.

The crisis has also forced millions of people to flee their homes, with large-scale displacement recorded in Iran and Lebanon.

UN Women estimates that approximately 1.6 million people have been displaced in Iran, while about 620,000 have been affected in Lebanon.

The agency noted that displacement has increased the vulnerability of women and girls, exposing them to unsafe living conditions, limited access to healthcare, and reduced economic opportunities.

It also highlighted the destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals and water systems, which has worsened access to essential services.

Even before the recent escalation, humanitarian needs were already severe, with tens of thousands of pregnant women in conflict zones struggling to access maternal healthcare.

UN Women further raised concerns about the challenges faced by women-led organisations, which are vital in humanitarian response and peacebuilding efforts.

These groups are reportedly operating under difficult conditions, including security threats, restricted civic space, and funding shortages.

The agency also reported cases of harassment, detention, and violence against women’s rights advocates in the region.

In response to the crisis, UN Women said it is expanding its support efforts, focusing on protection, economic assistance, and ensuring women’s participation in peace processes.

The organisation called for an immediate reduction in hostilities, protection of civilians, and unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

It urged all parties to use the ceasefire as a stepping stone toward lasting peace while prioritising the rights, safety, and dignity of women and girls.
