A 26-year-old mechanic, Chinonso Eze, who allegedly transferred his neighbour’s N440,000 to his own account through the neighbour’s phone, on Tuesday, appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

Eze is facing a charge of fraud, but he denied committing the offence.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Ajaga Agboko, told the court that the mechanic committed the fraud sometime in July on Lagos Island.

He said that the defendant, who had access to his neighbour’s phone, fraudulently transferred money from his bank account using a mobile money app the neighbour installed on the phone.

Agboko said that Eze transferred the sum from Mr Siaka Ogungbaye’s bank account into his own account.
He said that  Ogungbaye later received a bank debit alert and went to the bank  where he found out the money was transferred into  Eze’s account.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The section stipulates 15 years’ imprisonment for fraud.
The Magistrate, Mr T. A. Anjorin-Ajose, granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case until September 12, for substantive hearing.
