Malaria Is Not Caused by Stress, Physician Clarifies

A Family Physician at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Olurotimi Agboola, has dispelled the widespread belief that stress causes malaria, describing it as a misconception with no scientific basis.

Agboola made the clarification on Wednesday during a health talk and free eye screening programme organised by the management of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for its staff in Lagos.

According to the physician, malaria is caused by the *Plasmodium* parasite, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected female *Anopheles* mosquito.

He explained that while stress can weaken the body’s immune system and make individuals more vulnerable to illnesses, it does not directly cause malaria.

“There is nothing like stress-induced malaria,” Agboola said.

“Symptoms often attributed to stress-induced malaria may actually be linked to other health conditions or an existing malaria infection that requires proper medical evaluation.

“Although stress can weaken the immune system and make a person feel unwell, it does not directly cause malaria.”

The physician also warned against the indiscriminate use of anti-malaria medications, urging individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent fever, headaches, body aches, or fatigue to seek professional medical diagnosis.

“Rather than assuming you have malaria and resorting to self-medication, it is important to undergo proper diagnosis before treatment.

“Many illnesses present symptoms similar to malaria, making laboratory confirmation essential for accurate treatment,” he said.

Speaking on occupational health, Agboola expressed concern over excessive working hours and workplace fatigue, noting that overworked employees are more susceptible to mistakes, accidents, and various health complications.

He urged employers to prioritise staff welfare by creating conducive work environments, ensuring adequate rest periods, providing healthy meals or snacks where possible, and implementing policies that support work-life balance.

According to him, many developed countries enforce strict regulations on working hours to safeguard employees’ health and wellbeing, and Nigerian employers should adopt similar measures.

“Prolonged stress and fatigue are major risk factors for several health conditions and can adversely affect productivity and workplace safety.

“Workers must pay attention to their overall health, make healthy lifestyle choices, and create time for adequate rest,” he said.

Agboola called for increased awareness of occupational health issues and encouraged employers and employees to collaborate in promoting healthier workplaces and communities.
