Maersk begins cashew shipment from Nigeria, Ghana to India

maerskLEADING global shipping firm, Maersk Line, has started the shipment of cashew from Nigeria to Kochi, India.

The firm will also export the commodity from Ghana and some West African countries.

One of the vessels in the fleet, MV NewYorker, shipped no fewer than 1,185 Twenty Equivalent Units (TEUs) of cashew at Lagos Port Complex and other ports in West Africa and the ship berthed at the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) in Kochi.

Maersk Line is the global container division of AP Moller. Its fleet comprises of 550 vessels that have a capacity to carry 2.2 million containers, corresponding to more than 3,600,000 TEUs.

The latest voyage is the first direct Maersk main line service.

The vessel also has transshipment containers for Tuticorin and Mangalore, apart from Kerala, according to officials of the DP World, which operates the ICTT.

The shipping line has planned five vessels for the service in West Africa, a major sourcing hub for raw cashew.
