Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman found the back of the net, but Atletico Madrid fell short in the Copa del Rey final, losing to Real Sociedad after a tense penalty shootout.

Real Sociedad made a blistering start, taking the lead just seconds into the match through Ander Barrenetxea, who stunned Atletico with an early strike.

Lookman responded in the 19th minute, finishing calmly from inside the box to restore parity for Atletico Madrid.

However, Mikel Oyarzabal put Sociedad back in front shortly before halftime, giving his side a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.

Atletico pushed hard in the second half and eventually found an equaliser in the 83rd minute through Julian Alvarez, forcing the match into extra time.

With neither side able to secure a winner after 120 minutes, the final was decided by penalties.

Real Sociedad emerged victorious with a 4-3 win in the shootout, as Atletico’s Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez failed to convert their spot kicks.

Despite the defeat, Lookman made history by becoming only the **second Nigerian player to score in a Copa del Rey final, following Finidi George, who achieved the feat with Real Betis in 1997

Like Lookman, Finidi’s team also finished as runners-up in that final.
