The organizers of the 2023 Lekki Scrabble Classic on Wednesday said the table sport tournament would henceforth be staged annually to commemorate Nigeria’s independence.

The Media Officer of Lekki Scrabble Club, Tayo Ogunseye, said this in a statement in Lagos, adding that preparations were in top gear for the maiden edition of the tournament, which would kick-off on Oct. 4.

“The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 2023 Lekki Scrabble Classic is promising to leave no stone unturned as preparations for the grand competition hit the final stretch.

“This edition tagged LSC2023 is matching the fervour and the panache required of scrabble tournaments with high level of preparations to match the intense competition expected for the top prize at a relaxed arena.

“The uniqueness which the tournament offers has earned some good reviews from stakeholders as expectations are high due to the high standards the organizer Lekki Scrabble Club is known for.

“Now under a new captain, Samuel Anikoh, the tournament will now be an annual event,” he said.

Ogunseye explained that a member of the LOC, Emmanuel Egbele, known was confident the team would serve the best scrabble tournament at the two-day event.

“The preparation has been top notch and the LOC and entire members of the Club have been working round the clock to ensure its success.

“We want to ensure that all participants will have a great experience that will leave a lasting memory in the minds,” he said.

Egbele added that the classic, now an annual event, would take place close to the nation’s Independence Day celebration at Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.

“This is a partnership we have secured and we hope it will be mutually beneficial. Players will be able to appreciate this facility with its rich history.

“The prize-money for the winner has been more than doubled from N200,000 to N500,000, and it’s now a two-day event with more games to raise it to high-octane level.

“This also means a higher star prize of half a million naira and other prizes, which we would keep under wraps for now,” he said.

About 100 players are expected to participate in a total of 18 rounds of games in the single category.
