Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, Director-General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has tasked Nigerians on religious and ethnic tolerance to enhance democratic development in the country.

Sulaiman stated this in a congratulatory statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Deputy Director of Information, NILDS, Ms Joke Akinsanmi, to mark the 2023 Eid-el Maulud celebrations.

He said that NILDS had organised numerous conferences in pursuit of democratic stability, legislative efficiency and public participation.

The director-general said that the conference emphasized the importance of fostering the values and ethics related to religious tolerance.

“We will continue these efforts as we progress in our commitment to democratic principles and the unity and advancement of our nation,” he said.

Sulaiman felicitated Nigerians, particularly Muslim faithful, on the celebration of Eid-el Maulud marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed.

He urged them to use the moment to fortify their belief in God and embrace a shared sense of purpose.

The director-general also enjoined Muslims faithful to emulate the virtues preached and practised by the prophet, especially religious tolerance, love and patience.

“I wish my Muslim brothers and sisters in Nigeria and across the globe joyous and spiritually-uplifting Eid el-Maulud celebrations.

“We thank Almighty God for making us see this glorious day set aside to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

“As we mark this day, let us remember, cherish and imbibe the virtues which Prophet Muhammad exemplified.

“He exemplified virtues of patience, love, tolerance and perseverance. He devoted his life to building understanding among people while pursuing his faith.

“He had respect for other people’s faiths,” Sulaiman said.

He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to further thank God for His continued guidance and intervention in the challenges of the country.

He assured that NILDS would continue to do its utmost best to ensure necessary legislative frameworks to support government actions.

The director-general pledged NILDS’ commitment to providing technical assistance to members and committees in the legislature toward enhancing evidence-based decision-making.
